Karachi Nazim, Naimatullah Khan has approved the establishment of 16 Citizen Community Boards (CCBs) and directed the DCO to take immediate steps for the purpose.

The Nazim issued these directives during a meeting of the Community Development Department on Monday. The community development department, after examining 71 applications asked CDGK for the initial registration of 16 CCBs. In response the Naimatullah directed the EDO of the department, Iqbal Zuberi, to properly guide the applicants of CCBs and extend full support to them.

The meeting decided that the Community Development Department would receive the applications for setting up CCBs till November 2004, and agreed to provide equal opportunity of participation to the citizens of all localities in solving their problems through Boards.

The City Nazim urged on the concerned department to take promotional steps for generalising the concept of CCBs in the city. He proposed different kinds of workshops and seminars on the subject to properly train and guide the aspiring communities to set up CCBs.

It should be mentioned that under the new city government system, 25 people of any community can form a CCB by getting registered with Community Development Department and undertake various social works relating to health, education, sewerage, IT, repairing of roads etc in their respective areas.

CCBs would be liable to meet the 20 percent expenditure of such projects from its own resources, while the remaining 80 percent will be shared by CDGK or the allocated development programmes.
